I am not a John fan at all, but this story was beautiful. The only John we've seen, other than that brief glimpse with Mary in "The Pilot," has been in relation to his sons, and I appreciate someone looking into what created the detached, possessed man he grew up to be. I liked your discussion of his war experiences and the broken man who emerged in the aftermath of Vietnam. It translates well to his approach to hunting the demon, and the craziness of the chase a direct parallel to the craziness of the jungle. Your Mary was wonderful as well, and I really enjoyed the way you wrote she and John's early relationship, and the individual journeys they had to undertake, particularly John, before they were able to get together.
